The Province of Utrecht

The Province of Utrecht is responsible for the conservation of the “Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie”. The “Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie” consists of approximately 60 fortifications, hundreds of “werken” (build objects) and 42.000 ha of land. The Province of Utrecht, together with other public and private investors is investing tens of millions of euro in the “Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie” programme, and is seeking ways to maximize her return on investment: not only in terms of sustainability and heritage conservation: also in terms of innovation and the stimulation of creating business opportunities.

The pilot case (Werk bij Maarsseveen, C-Fordt) will provide more insights in:
*) The investment costs versus environmental impact and exploitation costs;
*) Research into the possibilities to use the landscape for energy-obtainment (‘energy-landscapes’);
*) The use of specific elements of the heritage building (and surroundings) in light of sustainability measures.
